A faster workflow can solve today’s task while changing what you are prepared to do tomorrow. Before using AI to automate something, decide what you still need to practice yourself.

Now, what changes now. Not in some distant science-fiction future. In the work we do, the skills we keep, the things we stop practicing, and how well we can tell when AI gets something wrong. If AI does something for you, do you slowly lose the ability to do it yourself?A new paper called Adaptive Complementarity in Human-AI Systems looks at something we rarely consider when evaluating AI. Usually, we ask: Did it help me do this task better today? The researchers argue that w

A little delegation can protect the part of the task you actually care about. You have promised to bring a dish to dinner. You like cooking. You do not like converting a recipe for twelve people, making a grocery list from three browser tabs, and discovering at the store that one recipe assumes you own a spice that only exists in very confident kitchens. The whole plan can start to feel less like cooking and more like an unpaid role in logistics. That is a useful place for a

AI expands capability. Human attention supplies direction.

Evidence of AI involvement tells you little about whether a message expresses what you mean. You ask AI to tidy a thank-you email after staying with friends. Your rough version mentions the breakfast pancakes and the dog who occupied most of the guest bed. The polished version is gracious. Somewhere along the way, the dog disappears. Would an AI watermark help you judge that revision? What changedIn an explanation published August 14 and updated September 1, 2026, Anthropic d

A helpful draft starts with knowing what you mean, including what you are willing to promise. A friend asks whether you can help with a move on Saturday. You like this friend. You also have one free afternoon this week, and you had plans for it that involved very little lifting. You open an AI tool and type, “Help me write a nice reply saying I can’t.” A courteous paragraph appears. It thanks your friend for thinking of you, expresses regret, and offers to help another weeken

The Year So Far: The State of AI & AttentionSix months in, the relationship between AI and our attention has changed shape. Here is the state of things. From Offloading to Surrender: What the Research Revealed About Thinking With MachinesThe easy answer says AI assistance simply makes us faster. The first half of 2026 gave us a far more precise picture. The foundation was already on the table: a study of 666 participants linked heavy AI use to weaker critical thinking through

You end a "highly automated" workday expecting to feel more relaxed. After all, the AI tools did help in your day. Instead, you feel worn down. That feeling has a name: AI brain fry. And it makes complete sense once you understand what's actually happening. When you hand a task to an AI tool, you outsource the execution — but your mind stays on the hook for everything that matters: the scope, the tone, the tradeoffs, the final call. Every prompt is a decision. Every output d

Ask yourself: Is this something only I can do? What Makes Us Irreplaceable? You wake up. Check your phone before your feet hit the floor. Scroll through notifications while your coffee brews. Answer emails during breakfast. Begin responding to demands before you've decided what actually matters today. By 10 AM, you've consumed more information than your great-grandparents processed in a week. By noon, you're tired in a way that has everything to do with energetic depletion, n

AI never grows tired, distracted, or impatient AI companionship is no longer science fiction. It is the rising reality of our world. These systems are designed to be "perfect" partners. They listen without judgment. They respond instantly. They never grow tired, distracted, or impatient. At first, it feels transformative. It offers a sense of calm and an immediate grounding effect. But as AI companionship scales, a secondary phenomenon is emerging. Over time, the conversation

Is "effortless" is the ultimate goal of technology? We have been conditioned to believe that "effortless" is the ultimate goal of technology. We want AI to summarize the meetings we missed, draft the emails we dread, and organize the chaos of our digital lives with a single prompt. We call this progress. But there is a hidden cost to this "effortless" existence: Internal Entropy. In physics, entropy is the natural drift toward disorder. Within our minds, it is the mental fog

For years, most of us lived on autopilot. Habits ran our days. Media shaped our thoughts quietly. Life moved at a pace where you didn’t need to pay close attention to stay grounded. But the world has changed faster than our nervous systems have. We now live inside an attention economy supercharged by AI, an economy built to study how your mind moves, anticipate your next action, and reinforce whatever patterns it finds. The Center for Humane Technology has been warning for ye

AI Extinction Fears At the center of the conversation is a simple idea: as AI becomes more capable, it could pursue goals that don’t match human well-being. The worry isn’t that AI becomes evil but that it becomes extremely competent in the wrong direction. The classic example is a system optimized for a harmless task that treats us as obstacles in the way. And let's throw in all the way back to The Terminator: Skynet took over, the hostile artificial intelligence in a post-a
