The number has no scientific origin. It emerged from an uncited marketing survey and spread because it confirmed something people already half-believed.

The real data is more precise — and more consequential.

Researcher Gloria Mark has spent two decades tracking how long people actually sustain attention on a screen before switching. A separate meta-analysis of nearly 100,000 people found that short-form video use is associated with meaningfully poorer attention and reduced inhibitory control — with effect sizes substantial enough to register in real-world performance. Meanwhile, a structured study examining long-term AI use in 500 adults found strong correlations with attention strain, information overload, and reduced self-assurance — not because AI is inherently harmful, but because the ambient pressure of constant input and output takes a measurable toll.

The easy answer: "Use better tools, build better habits."

What's actually happening: Individual discipline can't outpace systems explicitly engineered to interrupt. The research consistently shows that what works isn't trying harder — it's changing what surrounds you. The OECD students didn't develop stronger focus. Their environment stopped fragmenting it.

Here's the thing about the "shrinking attention span" narrative: it lets the environment off the hook and puts all the pressure on you. If your brain is biologically degrading, there's not much to be done. But if attention is a physical capacity responding to the forces exerted on it — which is what the research actually shows — then the situation looks different.

A river doesn't lose its power when the landscape gets steeper. It gets redirected. Your attention is doing the same thing. The capacity is intact. What's changing is the pressure applied to it, second by second, across every device and platform you encounter. The 23-minute recovery figure isn't a character flaw. It's a signal about how much energy the system is spending just trying to return to where it was.

What the OECD data points toward isn't extraordinary: put fewer interruptions in the environment, and attention stabilizes. That's not a productivity hack. It's closer to physics.

Make one structural change, not ten behavioral ones. A phone-free hour in the morning. Notifications off during a single focused block. One fewer open tab. The research suggests environment outperforms intention by a significant margin. Start there.
