Navigating Intent and Reality in the Age of AI

The Friction That Tells You Something
Imagine: You're using ChatGPT. It writes your emails, drafts your reports, answers questions. Then OpenAI announces a Pentagon partnership. Suddenly, you feel... friction. Not because the tool stopped working. Because something crossed a boundary you didn't know you had.
2.5 million people felt this in late February. ChatGPT uninstalls surged 295%. Anthropic refused the same deal—one company drew a line, another crossed it. When Claude hit #1 on the App Store, it wasn't because the AI was better. Trust had broken somewhere else.
The easy answer: "People switched because Claude is more ethical."
What's actually happening: When you delegate attention to a system, you're delegating agency. The system acts on your behalf, mediates your access to information, carries values. When those values misalign with yours, you feel it as cognitive friction—the system no longer represents your intent.

What's actually happening: When AI executes, your attention shifts to a higher abstraction. You stop asking "How do I do this?" and start asking "Did this do what I intended?" That's not less cognitive work—it's different cognitive work. You're not the actor anymore. You're the observer who watches and decides when to intervene.

But here's the surprise: verification requires more sustained attention than execution because the feedback is delayed and you're inferring backward from results.

Oversight at Impossible Scale

This redistribution from doing to directing is the core attentional shift of 2026. Most people experience it as fragmentation—"I'm so distracted, I can't focus." But that's not what's happening. Your attention isn't fragmenting. It's relocating to verification work, which requires sustained meta-attention across delayed feedback loops.
The systems you rely on—platforms, tools, AI agents—carry embedded values. When those values align with yours, mediation feels seamless. When they misalign, you experience it as friction, as cognitive dissonance. That friction is information. It's your attentional system detecting a boundary violation.
